NIMHANS Experts Advocate for Dedicated Digital Mental Health Research Center
In Bengaluru, mental health professionals have strongly emphasized the urgent need to establish a full-fledged department or center specifically dedicated to applied research on digital mental health applications. This call to action emerged from a significant three-day meeting that concluded on Friday at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS).
Meeting Focuses on Policy and Regulation for Digital Mental Health Tools
The gathering, titled Digital Technologies for Mental Health: Evolving Policy and Regulatory Recommendations for Safe Use, was organized by the NIMHANS-ICMR Centre for Advanced Research (CAR) on Digital Interventions for Mental Health Care. It was conducted in collaboration with the SHUT Unit at NIMHANS, bringing together experts to discuss critical issues in the rapidly evolving field of digital mental health.
Key Recommendations for a Dedicated Research Department
One of the primary recommendations put forth by the CAR was the creation of a dedicated department or center. This proposed entity would focus on generating implementation-focused evidence to support the seamless integration of digital tools into both training programs and clinical care. The initiative would leverage public-private partnerships to enhance its reach and effectiveness.
The center would prioritize several key areas:
- Assessing the real-world effectiveness of digital mental health applications.
- Ensuring user safety through rigorous evaluation and monitoring.
- Promoting responsible use of digital tools in mental health care settings.
Expert Endorsements and Future Directions
Dr. Mohan Isaac, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Western Australia, reflected on these recommendations with optimism. "I strongly hope the government takes this forward," he stated, highlighting the potential impact of such a department on advancing mental health care through technology.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Prabha S. Chandra, the director of NIMHANS, emphasized the timeliness of this initiative. "It is time to establish departments of digital mental health and digital health in every organization. This is now a specialty in itself and requires dedicated attention, and I believe this is the direction in which the future is heading," she asserted.
Dr. Chandra further noted that while the conclave primarily focused on mental health applications, other aspects of the digital mental health ecosystem must also be addressed comprehensively. "I would urge CAR to treat this as one in a series of consultations, with each area requiring separate attention and recommendations in the context of mental health," she added.
She stressed the importance of identifying existing groups working on this subject, learning from their efforts, and building upon current initiatives to foster a collaborative and progressive approach to digital mental health research and implementation.
