In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a young woman from Wayanad, Kerala, has died days after an alleged suicide attempt, unable to cope with the tragic death of her husband in Israel earlier this year.
A Double Tragedy for a Kerala Family
Reshma, aged 32, a native of Koleri, passed away on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. Her death follows her reported consumption of poison at her home on Monday. This devastating incident compounds the profound grief her family has endured since July, when her husband, Jinesh P Sukumaran, 38, was found dead in Israel.
Jinesh, a native of Koliyadi near Sultan Bathery in Wayanad, had moved to Israel for work in June. He was employed as a caregiver in Mevaseret Zion, near Jerusalem. In a shocking discovery in July, he was found dead by hanging. The elderly woman under his care was also found deceased at the same location, having suffered multiple stab injuries. The circumstances surrounding both deaths had sent shockwaves through their home community in Kerala.
Struggling with Unbearable Grief
Despite receiving counselling after her husband's death, Reshma struggled immensely to come to terms with the loss. A V Jayan, the ward member of Kenichira ward in Poothadi panchayat, revealed the depth of her despair. He stated that Reshma had attended several counselling sessions following the tragedy but remained inconsolable.
"She had not come to terms with Jinesh's death," Jayan said. "When I visited her recently, she had put up around 10-15 framed photographs of moments spent with Jinesh in the front room of the house. I had promised her help to get a job to move on." This poignant detail underscores the memorial she had created and her inability to envision a future without her husband.
Aftermath and Final Rites
The couple is survived by their 10-year-old daughter, who has now lost both parents within a span of a few months. After a postmortem at the medical college hospital, Reshma's body was taken to the Sultan Bathery taluk hospital. Her funeral was scheduled to be held on Thursday at the electric crematorium in Choottakadavu, Mananthavady.
Before his move to Israel for caregiving work, Jinesh was employed as a medical representative in Kerala. His sudden death overseas, followed by the tragic demise of his wife, has left the local community in Sultan Bathery and Wayanad in a state of deep mourning. The sequence of events highlights the severe psychological impact of sudden loss and the critical need for sustained mental health support for grieving families.
