18-Year-Old Tribal Girl Receives Free Hip Replacement Surgery in Ahmedabad
In a remarkable medical case from Ahmedabad, an 18-year-old tribal girl has successfully undergone a total hip replacement (THR) surgery after being diagnosed with avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip. The procedure was conducted at Nutan General Hospital under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) scheme, highlighting the impact of government healthcare initiatives in rural areas.
Rare Surgery Linked to Sickle Cell Anaemia
Dr. J P Modi, a spine surgeon and former medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, described the surgery as exceptionally rare due to its underlying cause. He explained that the girl's condition was triggered by sickle cell anaemia, a genetic disorder often inherited through generations. "This is a rare surgery because avascular necrosis of the hip is typically uncommon, and in this case, it was directly linked to sickle cell disease," Dr. Modi stated.
The patient, a resident of Virampur in Banaskantha district, had been suffering from severe mobility issues for 11 months. Initially, she was misdiagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) and began treatment, but her health did not improve. After being referred to Nutan Medical College in Visnagar, she was correctly identified with AVN of the hip, a condition where reduced blood flow to the femoral head leads to bone tissue death.
Challenges and Details of the Procedure
Dr. Modi emphasized the complexity of the surgery, noting that AVN affects approximately one in 1,000 people. "Unlike TB, which usually impacts a single joint, this patient required replacement of both hip joints due to the extensive damage caused by avascular necrosis," he said. The young age of the patient added to the surgical challenges, making the procedure particularly delicate and demanding advanced medical expertise.
The total hip replacement was performed free of cost, thanks to the PMJAY scheme and support from a trust at the medical college. This financial assistance ensured that the girl, from a tribal background, could access high-quality healthcare without economic burden. Dr. Modi highlighted that such initiatives are crucial for providing life-changing treatments to underserved communities.
Avascular necrosis of the hip is a debilitating disease that severely restricts movement and can lead to permanent disability if untreated. In this case, the successful surgery has restored the girl's mobility, offering her a chance at a normal life.
