Thane Police File FIR Against Doctor and Hospital Staff in 2017 Medical Negligence Case
The Naupada police in Thane have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a doctor and several staff members of a private hospital. This legal action stems from allegations of severe medical negligence that resulted in the tragic death of a 51-year-old woman back in 2017. The case, which had seen little movement for years, gained momentum following a decisive ruling by the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in September 2025.
Details of the Alleged Negligence
The woman was admitted to a hospital located near Teen Hath Naka on April 16, 2017, after she began experiencing symptoms including chest pain, dizziness, and profuse sweating. According to the FIR, the attending doctor was not present at the hospital during this critical time, and no immediate medical examination was conducted upon her arrival.
Despite assurances given to the patient and her family that diagnostic tests, such as an ECG, would be performed, no such procedures were carried out throughout the day. The patient was allegedly treated on an outpatient basis, with nursing staff administering injections without conducting a proper evaluation of her condition.
Deterioration and Fatal Outcome
Later in the evening, the woman's condition worsened significantly after she received an injection. She collapsed shortly thereafter and was declared dead soon after. The FIR highlights that the lack of timely and appropriate medical intervention directly contributed to this fatal outcome.
Legal and Investigative Progress
The matter remained largely stagnant until the complainant approached the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in 2019. In a landmark decision in September 2025, the commission ruled in favor of the complainant, acknowledging the negligence involved.
A subsequent inquiry conducted by the district civil surgeon further substantiated these claims, concluding that the patient did not receive the appropriate treatment required for her condition. This finding paved the way for criminal action to be taken against the responsible parties.
Police authorities have confirmed that a formal probe began after the case was officially filed on March 14. The investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the negligence and hold those accountable under the law.
This case underscores the critical importance of adherence to medical protocols and the legal recourse available to victims of medical malpractice.
