A 14-year-old girl from Florida has shown extraordinary bravery after undergoing an exhaustive 17-hour surgical procedure to amputate her left leg. This drastic step became necessary due to a rare and medically unexplained condition that caused the limb to grow at an extreme, uncontrollable rate, eventually confining her to a wheelchair.
A Life-Altering Mystery Since Childhood
Jasmine Ramirez's challenging journey began when she was just two years old. Her family recounts that her left leg started growing at a significantly faster pace than the rest of her body. The condition, so unique that doctors have never been able to give it a formal name, affected every part of the limb. Her arteries, veins, fat tissue, bone, and mass all expanded at an abnormal rate, her sister, Anastashia Ramirez, explained in an interview.
Initially, medical professionals managed the growth as a lymphomatous tumor, yet the root cause remained a persistent mystery. For a while in her early childhood, Jasmine could walk. However, as the years passed, the relentless enlargement of her leg made movement increasingly difficult. The limb eventually became so large that walking was impossible, forcing her to rely on a wheelchair. Her everyday clothing had to be specially tailored to fit the size of her leg.

Now a teenager, Jasmine has faced numerous hospital admissions and multiple surgeries in a bid to manage the growth. Described by her sister as "creative, brave, sassy, and full of light," her resilience was tested again recently. She was admitted to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital after developing a dangerous, antibiotic-resistant infection in the affected leg. Fearing for her life, the family was left with limited choices.
They made the heart-wrenching decision to proceed with a full amputation. The complex surgery lasted approximately 16.5 to 17 hours. During this marathon operation, surgeons removed Jasmine's left leg, which weighed just over 170 pounds. They also excised a tumor from her abdomen. The transformation was stark; after the surgery, Jasmine's total body weight was 80 pounds.
Recovery and a Family's Plea for Support
Post-surgery, Jasmine is on a path to recovery. "She’s doing better every day," Anastashia Ramirez reported. "She’s getting out of bed. They’re putting her in the wheelchair… She’s been doing great." The family's focus is now on her rehabilitation and adapting to a new normal.
The emotional and financial toll on the Ramirez family is immense. With Jasmine requiring full-time care and her parents raising six other children, the challenges are significant. Anastashia started a GoFundMe campaign which has raised over $16,000 to help cover medical expenses and support the family.
