A 20-year-old engineering student from Amravati, Anvita Moon, has given her father Anant Moon a second chance at life by donating a portion of her liver. The successful transplant was performed at a private hospital in Nagpur just ahead of Father's Day.
Father's Battle with Liver Cirrhosis
Anant Moon, 55, had been battling advanced liver cirrhosis for over three years. Despite treatment at multiple hospitals, his condition continued to deteriorate, and doctors determined that a liver transplant was the only viable option. As the search for a suitable donor continued and his health worsened, Anvita volunteered to donate a portion of her liver.
Donor's Sacrifice Amid Exams
The decision came at a crucial stage in Anvita's life. A third-year engineering student, she was preparing for her university exams while undergoing medical, psychological, and fitness assessments required for living organ donation. She appeared for her theory exams before the surgery and completed her practical examination after recovering from the procedure.
Robotic-Assisted Surgery
Doctors said the transplant was carried out by a multidisciplinary team, with the donor surgery performed using robot-assisted technology. This allowed for a minimally invasive procedure and faster recovery for the donor. Dr. Rajvilas Narkhede, GI surgeon and liver transplant specialist, said, "The patient was suffering from advanced liver disease and required urgent transplantation. Through careful planning, comprehensive donor evaluation, and coordinated teamwork, we were able to achieve a successful outcome."
Life-Saving Option for End-Stage Liver Disease
Dr. Gaurav Chaubal, liver transplant specialist associated with the procedure, noted that living-donor liver transplantation continues to be a life-saving option for patients with end-stage liver disease, while advances in robotic surgery are helping improve donor recovery. The surgery was successful, with the transplanted liver segment functioning well in the recipient. Anvita was discharged within six days of the operation, while her father returned home after 13 days.
