SGPGIMS Lucknow Marks Historic Multi-Organ Donation After Two Decades

In a landmark medical event, the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow successfully conducted its first multi-organ donation in twenty years this Sunday. This life-saving initiative was made possible after the wife of a brain-stem death patient bravely consented to donate his body parts, showcasing immense compassion and altruism.

Tragic Accident Leads to Generous Donation

The patient, Sandeep Kumar, aged 42, was involved in a severe road accident on February 7. He was subsequently admitted to the Apex Trauma Centre at SGPGIMS on February 21, where he was treated for critically sustained injuries. On February 22, a panel of four expert doctors declared him brain dead following the prescribed medical protocols. At this pivotal moment, his wife, Laxmi, made the courageous decision to donate her husband's organs, turning a personal tragedy into a beacon of hope for others.

Coordinated Efforts Under SOTTO-UP Guidance

Under the expert guidance of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization Uttar Pradesh (SOTTO-UP), a highly coordinated effort was launched to facilitate the organ retrieval and transplantation process. This collaboration involved multiple medical teams working seamlessly to ensure the success of the multi-organ donation.

Successful Organ Retrieval and Transplantation

The liver retrieval and transplantation were carried out through a collaboration between SGPGIMS and King George's Medical University (KGMU). The liver was successfully transplanted to a patient from KGMU's waiting list, providing a new lease on life. For the kidneys, retrieval was performed by Urologist Dr. M.S. Ansari and his team, with the transplant conducted at the Nephrology department under the supervision of Prof Narayan Prasad at SGPGIMS. Additionally, cornea harvesting and transplantation were completed under the expert supervision of Prof Apijit Kaur and her team at KGMU, further extending the impact of this donation.

Honoring the Donor's Legacy

In a heartfelt tribute, a guard of honour was given to the donor in the presence of senior officials, recognizing the selfless act that saved multiple lives. This event not only highlights the advancements in medical procedures but also underscores the critical importance of organ donation awareness and consent in India.
