Scarless Robotic Surgery Saves Tonsil Cancer Patient

Lucknow: In a major medical breakthrough, doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Lucknow successfully performed scarless robotic surgery on a 35-year-old patient suffering from tonsil cancer. The patient, Shakeel Ahmad from Bahraich, was diagnosed with Stage II tonsil cancer after experiencing persistent throat pain and difficulty in swallowing. He underwent Trans Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS), a minimally invasive procedure that allowed the tumor to be removed through the mouth without any external cuts or scars.

Procedure and Recovery

During the surgery, the tumor was extracted via the oral cavity, while lymph nodes from the neck were removed through a small incision. The patient resumed oral intake soon after the operation with minimal discomfort and was discharged from the hospital on Saturday, just four days after the procedure. Dr. Kamlesh Verma, Director of Surgical Oncology at the hospital, emphasized that TORS can reduce the need for chemotherapy or radiation in some cases, ensuring faster recovery and better quality of life for patients.

Expert Advice

Dr. Verma advised the public not to ignore persistent throat pain, difficulty in swallowing, or swelling on the neck, as these could be early signs of tonsil cancer. Early detection and advanced surgical techniques like TORS can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
