A 56-year-old man from Mainpuri, suffering from liver failure, was given a new lease of life through a rare bloodless liver transplant procedure at Apollomedics Super Speciality Hospital in Lucknow. His 45-year-old wife donated a portion of her liver for the surgery.
Details of the Procedure
Senior director and head of liver transplant, Dr Abhishek Yadav, shared that not a single unit of blood was transfused to the patient. This is significant because liver transplants typically involve substantial blood loss, often around 2 to 3 litres, necessitating blood transfusion. However, due to the unavailability of adequate blood donors in this case, the medical team adopted a meticulous surgical strategy to minimize blood loss.
Dr Utkarsh Srivastava, who performed the surgery alongside Dr Yadav, explained that advanced surgical techniques and careful intra-operative management enabled the team to complete the complex surgery without transfusion. Such an approach remains extremely rare in liver transplant procedures.
Recovery and Discharge
The patient recovered well after the procedure and was discharged on the eighth day, significantly earlier than the usual 20 to 25 days typically required after such surgeries. MD and CEO Dr Mayank Somani noted that this procedure reflects the expertise and advanced infrastructure available at the hospital. He also highlighted that the hospital’s liver transplant team has successfully conducted 20 liver transplants over the past seven months, including several complex cases.
This successful bloodless liver transplant underscores the hospital’s commitment to innovative surgical methods and patient care, even in challenging circumstances.
