Tragic Death of Young Doctor in Nagpur Hotel Room

A 26-year-old resident doctor from Nagpur's Government Medical College and Hospital was found dead in a city hotel room on Monday morning, in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide. The incident occurred just six days after he joined the institution for postgraduate studies, sending shockwaves through the medical community.

Details of the Deceased and His Background

The deceased has been identified as Dr Ritwik Sagar Thakur, a native of Chikhli in Buldhana district. Dr Thakur had completed his MBBS from the prestigious Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital in Mumbai. He came from a family of medical professionals, with both his parents and sister being doctors themselves.

Dr Thakur had joined GMCH's ophthalmology postgraduate programme on January 27, 2024. According to college authorities, he had not yet been allotted a room in the PG hostel and was temporarily staying at a hotel near the Ganeshpeth bus stand while awaiting accommodation.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Discovery

The tragic discovery unfolded on Monday when Dr Thakur failed to report to the college for his duties. His supervising professor, Dr Dilip Umre, who heads the unit where Dr Thakur worked, grew concerned and contacted the young doctor's father to check on his whereabouts.

Despite repeated attempts by family members and colleagues, they were unable to reach Dr Thakur on his mobile phone. This prompted them to alert the hotel management where he was staying.

Hotel staff knocked on Dr Thakur's room door but received no response. Concerned for his safety, they immediately informed the police. Officers from Ganeshpeth police station reached the location and broke open the door, where they discovered Dr Thakur hanging inside the room.

Police Investigation and Community Response

Ganeshpeth police have registered a case and launched a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to this tragic incident. Authorities confirmed that no suicide note was found at the scene, and the precise reason behind the death remains unknown at this stage.

The doctor's untimely death has left his colleagues and fellow students deeply shaken. Many have expressed profound grief over the loss of a promising young medical professional at the very beginning of his postgraduate journey. The medical community in Nagpur is mourning the loss while grappling with questions about what might have driven the young doctor to take such an extreme step.

As the investigation continues, authorities are examining all possible angles to understand the factors that may have contributed to this tragedy. The incident has highlighted the immense pressures faced by medical students and resident doctors, particularly during the demanding early stages of their postgraduate training.
