Family Files Police Complaint Over Alleged Medical Negligence in Hospital Death
A distressing case of alleged medical negligence has emerged from Kharagpur, where a family has filed a formal complaint at the Kotwali police station. The complaint centers on the tragic death of a 32-year-old woman at Midnapore Medical College Hospital on Friday, with the family asserting that lapses in medical care directly contributed to the fatal outcome.
Details of the Hospital Admission and Alleged Lapses
The deceased, identified as Monika Karan Gorai, aged 32 and a resident of Purunabera under the Keshpur police station area, was admitted to the maternity ward of Midnapore Medical College Hospital around 4:30 AM on Friday. She was there for the delivery of her second child. According to her husband, Anup, doctors initially suggested a caesarean section but opted to wait for a normal delivery instead.
Monika successfully gave birth to a baby girl between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM. However, the family alleges a critical delay in post-delivery care. They claim that she was left unstitched after childbirth, and despite repeated complaints to doctors and nurses, the stitching procedure was only performed around 2:00 PM. By this time, the family reports that Monika had lost a significant amount of blood and was experiencing severe breathing difficulties.
Family's Desperate Pleas and the Tragic Outcome
Fearing for her life, the family urgently requested a transfer to a private hospital for better medical attention. They were reportedly told by hospital staff that moving her in her condition would be harmful. Tragically, Monika Gorai passed away around 8:00 PM on the same day.
The newborn baby girl, weighing 4 kilograms, was reportedly kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to poor health following the delivery. Chinu Roy, the deceased's sister-in-law, voiced the family's anguish, stating, "Despite the baby weighing 4kg, doctors delayed the stitching. We believe this negligence directly led to her death."
Hospital Administration's Response and Pending Investigation
In response to the allegations, Hospital Superintendent Indranil Sen acknowledged the death as an unfortunate incident. He confirmed that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the precise cause of death. "Investigations will be conducted both institutionally and at the district level. We note that negligence has been alleged in this case," Sen stated, indicating that the matter is under official scrutiny.
This case has raised serious questions about procedural protocols and patient care standards at the medical facility. The police complaint ensures that the allegations of delayed medical intervention and possible negligence will be formally examined as part of the ongoing investigations.
