A simple motorcycle trip to the market turned into a horrific nightmare for a young man from Madhya Pradesh after a speeding car caused a devastating accident, leaving him impaled on an iron rod and facing a torturous journey for medical help.
The Fateful Bike Ride and Sudden Impact
On Saturday afternoon, 29-year-old Dharmendra Uikey from Kotmi Mal village was riding his motorcycle with his sister, Poonam, towards Padhar market. At around 2:10 pm, their lives changed in an instant on the Betul-Bhopal national highway near the Neem Pani Bacha Dhaba, under Shahpur police station limits.
According to police, a red car, moving at high speed, suddenly grazed the rear of their bike. The impact caused Dharmendra to lose control, sending both siblings plunging off a culvert. While his sister sustained injuries in the fall, Dharmendra's fate was far more gruesome. He fell onto exposed iron rods below, with one rod piercing straight through his thigh. The rod remained embedded in the structure, trapping him at the scene.
Race Against Time: The Rescue Operation
Shahpur police station incharge Devkaran Dehariya detailed the swift response. Alerted by a local resident, a police team that was nearby reached the spot within 10 minutes. The officers were confronted with a critical challenge: the iron rod was still attached to the pillar, with one end lodged in Dharmendra's leg.
"We had to cut the rod using an iron cutting blade," said Dehariya. By 2:30 pm, just 20 minutes after the accident, they successfully freed Dharmendra and rushed him to the district hospital in Betul. After primary treatment, doctors made a crucial decision. Fearing that a local surgery could worsen his condition, they referred him to Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal for specialized care. The iron rod was left in his leg for the journey.
The 200-Kilometer Ordeal and Ongoing Search
What followed was an excruciating over 200-kilometer ambulance journey to Bhopal. Conscious throughout, Dharmendra battled intense pain as the vehicle sped towards the capital, where a complex surgery awaited him.
Meanwhile, his sister Poonam is receiving treatment at the Betul district hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The Shahpur police have registered a case and are conducting a search for the driver of the red car, who fled the scene after causing the accident.
This shocking incident highlights the perils on national highways and the critical importance of emergency medical and police response in rural areas, which ultimately saved a life amid terrifying circumstances.
