Lucknow has become the epicenter of advanced kidney care in India as it hosts a monumental gathering of nephrology experts. The city is welcoming over 2,500 nephrologists from across India and 25 countries for the 42nd annual conference of the Indian Society of Nephrology (ISNCON). The prestigious event is being held at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS).
A Historic Return After 25 Years
This marks a significant homecoming for the conference, which is being held in Lucknow after a gap of nearly 25 years. The four-day knowledge extravaganza will be formally inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday. The event underscores the growing national and global focus on combating kidney diseases.
Professor Narayan Prasad, Head of Nephrology at SGPGIMS and the Organising Secretary for ISNCON, highlighted the importance of this congregation. He stated that this massive assembly of medical students, healthcare professionals, and nephrology experts reflects the rising concern over kidney disorders. It also stands as a testament to SGPGI's formidable reputation and expertise in interventional nephrology and advanced kidney care.
SGPGIMS: A Hub for Global Training in Interventional Nephrology
Professor Prasad elaborated on the institute's pioneering role. SGPGIMS has successfully established a robust interventional nephrology programme. This initiative provides advanced training not only to doctors from India but also to international specialists hailing from countries like Mexico, Myanmar, and Ethiopia.
He explained that interventional nephrology involves cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures. These include:
- Creating dialysis fistulas
- Inserting dialysis catheters
- Performing complex vascular interventions
- Conducting kidney biopsies
All these are achieved without the need for major surgery, leading to faster patient recovery and significantly reduced complications.
Focus on Workshops and Early Detection
Senior faculty member Professor Anupama Kaul provided details about the conference's academic rigour. The event will feature six in-depth workshops designed to cover the latest advancements in key sub-specialties. The workshop topics are:
- Interventional Nephrology
- Transplant Immunology
- Critical Care Nephrology
- Onco-Nephrology
- Paediatric Nephrology
A special emphasis will be placed on the early detection of kidney disorders, a crucial factor in improving patient outcomes and managing the disease burden effectively.
The conference will also see the participation of other prominent dignitaries. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak and State Medical Education Minister Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh are scheduled to attend the event, highlighting the government's support for advancing medical science and healthcare.
Driving the Future of Kidney Care in India
The 42nd ISNCON is more than just an academic conference; it is a powerful convergence of minds aimed at shaping the future of nephrology in India and beyond. By facilitating the exchange of groundbreaking research, innovative techniques, and collaborative strategies, the summit aims to accelerate progress in kidney disease prevention, treatment, and patient care. The return of this premier event to Lucknow after a quarter-century solidifies the city's and SGPGIMS's position as a leading light in the global medical community's fight against kidney-related ailments.
