K Karthick, a resident of Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district, met with a severe accident on the evening of January 27. While riding a two-wheeler around 6:30 PM, he sustained a critical head injury that left him unconscious. He was immediately rushed to the trauma care centre at GRH, where he received emergency medical attention.
Despite the best efforts of the hospital staff, Karthick's condition did not improve. On February 3 at 7:20 PM, he was officially declared brain dead, a devastating outcome for his family and the medical team involved in his care.
Organ Harvesting and Distribution Process
Following this tragic diagnosis, the hospital authorities approached Karthick's parents to discuss the possibility of organ donation. After careful consideration and with their heartfelt consent, the organ harvesting procedure was carried out on Thursday at GRH.
The harvested organs were meticulously distributed to various medical institutions across Tamil Nadu, ensuring they reached recipients in urgent need:
- Heart: Transported to MGM Health Care in Chennai for transplantation.
- Liver: Sent to Suwetha Speciality Hospital in Trichy for a life-saving procedure.
- Kidneys: Allocated to two separate facilities—one to Government Thanjavur Medical College Hospital and the other to Kauvery Medical Centre in Trichy.
- Cornea, Skin, and Bone: These tissues were retained at GRH for future medical use, potentially aiding in reconstructive surgeries and vision restoration.
