Kochi Hospital Achieves Successful Heart Transplant for Teenage Patient

A hospital in Kochi has successfully performed a life-saving heart transplant on a 15-year-old girl from Malappuram, marking a significant medical achievement in the region. The procedure, which took place on Thursday, utilized a donated heart from Jayi Jayakumar, a 35-year-old IT professional from Thiruvananthapuram who was declared brain-dead on April 4.

Urgent Transplant for Critical Condition

The young recipient had been suffering from an abnormal enlargement of the heart's right chambers, a serious condition that required immediate intervention. She had been registered on the K-SOTTO transplant registry for just one month, highlighting the urgency of her situation. Her family had traveled to Chennai in search of faster treatment options when they received the crucial notification on Wednesday night, prompting an immediate return flight to Kerala.

Coordinated Medical Effort and Transport

At 4 am on Thursday, a dedicated medical team from Lissie Hospital departed for Thiruvananthapuram to retrieve the donor heart. The organ was transported by helicopter, departing at 1:45 pm and landing in Kochi at 2:40 pm. A police green corridor ensured the heart reached the hospital in just four minutes, demonstrating exceptional coordination between medical and law enforcement agencies.

Surgical Procedure and Critical Hours

The transplant surgery, led by Dr. Jose Chacko Periyapuram, commenced immediately upon the heart's arrival. By 5:30 pm, the transplanted heart was successfully beating in the young patient's chest, with the procedure completed by 9 pm. Medical professionals have emphasized that the next 48 hours remain critical for monitoring the patient's recovery and ensuring the transplant's long-term success.

Multiple Organ Donations Save Additional Lives

In addition to the heart, Jayi Jayakumar's other organs were also donated, extending his legacy of life-saving generosity. One kidney was transplanted at Kozhikode Government Medical College, while the other kidney and liver were sent to KIMSHEALTH. Both corneas were donated to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology in Thiruvananthapuram, potentially restoring vision to multiple recipients.

This comprehensive organ donation effort underscores the profound impact that a single donor can have on numerous lives, transforming tragedy into hope for families across Kerala.
