The Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services (DMS) in Tamil Nadu has taken decisive action against a prominent hospital in Tiruchirappalli. Authorities have ordered the temporary cancellation of the kidney transplant licence granted to Star KIMS Hospital. This move comes in the wake of a major investigation into an alleged nationwide illegal organ trade racket, where the hospital and one of its doctors have been implicated.
Inquiry Committee Uncovers Serious Deviations
The suspension follows the submission of a preliminary report by a state government-appointed inquiry committee. This panel was led by Dr. A Pragalathan, the Additional Director of Medical Services (Inspection). The committee conducted a rigorous three-day inquiry, scrutinising key individuals including the doctor in question and the hospital's managing director, G Rajarathinam. Notably, Rajarathinam has been named by Maharashtra Police as the prime suspect in the extensive racket.
During the investigation, the team obtained and examined crucial documents such as patient case sheets, donor registries, and transplant records. Joint Director of Health Services (JDHS) G C Gopinath confirmed the development, stating that the committee had flagged several significant deviations from standard medical and ethical protocols.

The case stems from allegations made by Maharashtra police, who claim that several illegal kidney transplant surgeries were performed at Star KIMS Hospital. The investigation suggests that the implicated doctor played a pivotal role in the racket by identifying potential donors through a network of intermediaries.
