KGMU Doctors Save 11-Month-Old with Rare Lung Defect in 3.5-Hour Surgery
KGMU Saves 11-Month-Old from Congenital Lung Defect

In a remarkable medical achievement, a team of surgeons at Lucknow's King George's Medical University (KGMU) has given a new lease of life to an 11-month-old infant battling a severe congenital lung defect. The complex surgery, which lasted for three and a half hours, successfully corrected a condition that had left the child struggling to breathe for over a month.

A Month-Long Struggle for Breath

The patient, young Virat Maurya from Sikka Kheda village in Rae Bareli, had been suffering from a persistent cough, fever, and acute breathing difficulties. His distressed father, Ram Achal Maurya, recounted how the child's health deteriorated to the point where he stopped feeding and would cry incessantly due to discomfort. Initially, the family sought help at AIIMS in Rae Bareli. After preliminary examinations pointed towards a serious lung anomaly, the infant was urgently referred to the specialised paediatric surgery department at KGMU for advanced care and intervention.

Diagnosis: The Rare Lobar Emphysema

Upon admission to KGMU, detailed imaging tests were conducted which revealed the precise nature of the life-threatening condition. Professor JD Rawat, the head of the paediatric surgery department at KGMU, explained the diagnosis. The tests confirmed that the baby was suffering from 'lobar emphysema'. This is a congenital defect where one lobe of the lung becomes hyper-inflated like a balloon, trapping air inside. This over-inflated lobe then puts immense pressure on the surrounding healthy lung tissue and the heart, severely compromising the child's ability to breathe normally. Without surgical correction, the condition can be fatal.

A Delicate Surgical Triumph

Facing this critical situation, the expert surgical team at KGMU led by Prof. Rawat meticulously planned and executed a life-saving procedure. The three-and-a-half-hour long surgery involved addressing the defective portion of the lung. The successful operation relieved the compression on the healthy organs, allowing them to function properly. This intervention at KGMU, a premier medical institution in Uttar Pradesh, highlights the advanced paediatric surgical capabilities available in the state. The story of Virat Maurya underscores the importance of timely diagnosis and referral to specialised centres for treating complex congenital disorders in children.

The child is now on the path to recovery, having overcome a significant health challenge thanks to the skilled medical team. This case serves as a beacon of hope for many families dealing with similar rare paediatric conditions and reinforces the critical role of specialised healthcare infrastructure.
