KGMU's ICU Cuts Deaths from 26% to 18% with Precision Medicine
KGMU ICU Reduces Mortality Rate to 18% with Innovation

In a remarkable medical breakthrough, King George's Medical University in Lucknow has achieved a significant reduction in mortality rates among critically ill patients through its advanced Critical Care ICU. The institution has successfully brought down death rates from 26% to 18% within just one year, outperforming the national ICU average of 23%.

Precision Medicine Unit Drives Life-Saving Results

The dramatic improvement was revealed during the 9th Foundation Day celebrations of the Critical Care Medicine department. Professor Avinash Agrawal, head of the department, shared compelling statistics showing that 1,078 critically ill patients requiring ventilator support were admitted from various districts over the past year.

The cornerstone of this success story is the newly established Precision Medicine Unit (PMU), which has revolutionized patient care through immediate testing capabilities, genetic profiling, and biomarker-based diagnosis. This advanced approach enables doctors to prescribe the most accurate treatments tailored to individual patients.

How Precision Medicine Transforms Patient Outcomes

According to Professor Shantanu Prakash, precision medicine represents a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery. This innovative approach creates personalized treatment plans based on a patient's unique genetic makeup, lifestyle factors, and environmental influences. The results speak for themselves: better treatment outcomes, reduced side effects, and lower overall healthcare costs.

Professor Soniya Nityanand, Vice-Chancellor of KGMU, emphasized that PMU-supported treatment ensures each patient receives the most effective medications while significantly reducing the risk of adverse drug reactions and unnecessary medical expenses.

Expanding Critical Care Excellence Across Uttar Pradesh

The success has caught the attention of state health authorities. Dr. Aparna U, Director General of Medical Education, praised the department's achievements and confirmed that the Precision Medicine Unit is already proving crucial for enhancing patient care quality.

Looking toward the future, she revealed ambitious plans to establish KGMU as Uttar Pradesh's nodal center for critical care and personalized treatment training. There's a strong emphasis on expanding precision medicine beyond Lucknow to new medical colleges and district hospitals across the state, supported by standardized protocols developed at KGMU.

This expansion initiative promises to democratize advanced medical care, ensuring that patients throughout Uttar Pradesh can benefit from the same life-saving precision medicine approaches that have proven so successful at KGMU's Critical Care ICU.
