A Decade-Long Journey from Hospital Bed to Wedding Altar
The road to this happy day was paved with immense struggle. Alex was diagnosed in childhood with a rare metabolic disorder called primary hyperoxaluria. This condition meant his liver could not produce a crucial enzyme, leading to a dangerous buildup of oxalate that ravaged his kidneys. By the tender age of 13, his kidneys had failed, forcing him to rely on dialysis for survival.
His life took a historic turn on February 8, 2014. At just 15 years old and a Class X student, Alex underwent a groundbreaking surgery. A medical team led by Dr. Venugopal B performed Kerala's maiden simultaneous liver and kidney transplant. The organs, donated by a brain-dead woman, gifted Alex what his doctors called a "new lease of life."
Love Blossoms Amidst a New Beginning
The marriage marks the beautiful culmination of a five-year romance. The couple first met at their local church, where their friendship gradually deepened into love. "We knew each other for the past five years. I used to meet her at church and gradually our friendship blossomed into love," Alex shared with the media.
Jyothy, who is 23 and also Alex's cousin, expressed unwavering confidence in their bond. "I know him inside out and how good a person he is. It was a dream come true for both of us," she said, her happiness evident. "The concept is that the liver provides immunological protection to the kidney," Dr. Venugopal explained. Because the liver is immunologically privileged, it significantly lowers the risk of the body rejecting the new kidney. "If the liver transplant is successful, we expect a near-normal life for the recipient," he affirmed.
Today, the 28-year-old Alex is a picture of health, working as a contract employee at the Thiruvananthapuram airport—a stark contrast to his "miserable" and fear-filled childhood. His story now serves as a powerful beacon for countless others facing end-stage organ failure.
