Jaiswal, Shafali get NADA notices for missed dope tests

NEW DELHI: Indian cricketers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shafali Verma have received official notices from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after failing to attend scheduled dope tests last year. Both players are part of NADA's Registered Testing Pool (RTP), which mandates that they regularly update their whereabouts and remain available for surprise testing during a fixed daily time slot.

Missed tests and lack of explanation

According to sources, the two cricketers were unavailable during their scheduled tests and did not provide any explanation for their absence. This has now resulted in their first official “whereabouts failure” under the anti-doping framework. The notices have been sent to the athletes, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) also being informed.

Consequences of a missed test

Under anti-doping regulations, athletes in the RTP must constantly update their location details to allow testers to reach them at any time. A single missed test is treated as a warning, but three such failures within a specified period can constitute a doping violation and may lead to suspension.

BCCI response and broader context

The BCCI confirmed receiving the notification from NADA and stated it would investigate the matter. A BCCI source said, “Yes, we have received notification from NADA on missed tests. We will check with them as to how it happened, and will take necessary steps so that such things do not happen in future.” The issue has gained significance as cricket is set to return to the Olympics at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, underscoring the need for strict anti-doping compliance.

Current RTP list

At present, 13 Indian cricketers are part of NADA's RTP list, including prominent players such as Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rishabh Pant. The development highlights the importance of adherence to anti-doping protocols among top athletes.
