JLN Hospital in Ajmer Achieves Medical Milestone with Rare Gastric Transection Surgery
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at JLN Hospital in Ajmer have performed what is being hailed as India's first documented surgery for trauma-induced gastric transection. This rare and complex condition involves the stomach splitting into two separate parts due to severe physical trauma. The successful procedure represents only the sixth such case reported worldwide, placing Indian medical expertise on the global map for handling extreme trauma cases.
Industrial Accident Leads to Rare Medical Emergency
The patient, a 29-year-old labourer, suffered catastrophic injuries in an industrial accident at Kishangarh's Marble City. Senior surgeon Dr. Anil K. Sharma explained the mechanism of injury during a press conference. "The patient experienced extremely heavy pressure that caused his stomach to split into two distinct parts, a condition medically termed Gastric Transection," said Dr. Sharma. "This represents only the sixth documented case worldwide resulting from trauma and marks India's inaugural case."
JLN Medical College principal Dr. Anil Samariya and hospital superintendent Dr. Arvind Khare provided additional details about the extensive injuries sustained by the patient. Beyond the gastric transection, the trauma included:
- Complete rupture of the spleen
- Significant kidney injuries
- Eight shattered ribs requiring stabilization
- Two pelvic fractures complicating mobility
Dr. Khare described the accident scenario: "A trolley loaded with marble slabs went completely out of control and struck the patient's abdomen with tremendous force. The severe shearing impact resulted in extensive crushing injuries throughout his body."
Complex Surgical Intervention and Recovery Process
Dr. Amit Yadav detailed the patient's medical journey, beginning with initial stabilization at a local hospital before emergency transfer to Ajmer for specialized care. Upon arrival at JLN Hospital, medical teams confronted a critical situation with a 10-centimeter deep abdominal wound exposing internal organs and clear indications of hip fractures.
On February 6, the surgical team performed an emergency exploratory laparotomy to address the life-threatening injuries. The complex procedure involved:
- Controlling massive internal bleeding to stabilize the patient
- Thorough cleaning and preparation of the abdominal cavity
- Surgical reconnection of the severed stomach sections
- Performance of a feeding jejunostomy to ensure nutritional support during recovery
Multidisciplinary Medical Team Behind the Success
The successful outcome resulted from coordinated efforts across multiple medical specialties. The primary surgical team included Dr. Anil K. Sharma, Dr. Purnima Sagar, Dr. Mehul Singhal, Dr. Naman Somani, and Dr. Vipin Deep Singh. Critical support came from anaesthesiologists Dr. Kuldeep, Dr. Jyoti, and Dr. Ekta, along with nursing staff led by Shri Naveen.
This medical breakthrough demonstrates India's growing capability in handling extreme trauma cases and adds valuable knowledge to global medical literature about managing gastric transection resulting from traumatic incidents. The patient continues to receive comprehensive post-operative care with monitoring of his recovery progress from multiple severe injuries.
