A tragic incident unfolded in Dumka, Jharkhand, on Thursday evening, resulting in the death of a senior advocate's wife. Namita Gorai, aged 53, allegedly died by suicide at the couple's ancestral home.
Details of the Heartbreaking Incident
The incident occurred at the family's residence located in Bagnocha Mohalla on the Dudhani-Rasikpur bypass road. According to police reports filed on Friday, Namita Gorai poured kerosene and set herself ablaze inside a bathroom.
At the time of the tragedy, her husband, senior advocate Sanjeev Kumar Gorai, was attending court proceedings. The elderly mother of Sanjeev Gorai was asleep in her room, while his younger brother had gone to the market for work. The younger brother's wife was currently staying at her parents' home.
The couple has one son who is pursuing an MTech degree in Varanasi.
Chronic Illness and Family's Statement
In his statement to the police, Sanjeev Kumar Gorai revealed a possible motive behind the extreme step. He stated that Namita had been suffering from a chronic skin ailment for a long period.
Her medical journey included treatment in Dumka and Asansol, but these did not yield significant improvement. She was currently under care at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The family had plans to visit the Delhi hospital again within a week.
Gorai explicitly told investigators that he believed his wife's debilitating illness led to her drastic action. He emphasized that there were no ongoing family disputes or marital problems that could have contributed to the tragedy.
Discovery and Police Investigation
The grim discovery was made around 3 pm on Thursday when Gorai's younger brother returned home. He grew concerned when his sister-in-law did not emerge from the bathroom for an extended time.
Upon detecting a strong smell of burning, he forced the door open. Inside, he found Namita Gorai fully charred and lying on the floor. He immediately raised an alarm, alerting neighbors and others for help.
Jagnath Dhan, the officer-in-charge of the Dumka town police station, visited the spot for inspection. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination, which was conducted on Friday.
"A case of unnatural death has been lodged, and further investigation is ongoing," stated Officer Dhan, confirming the procedural steps taken by the authorities.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the profound impact of chronic health conditions on mental well-being.
