In the remote, insurgency-hit district of Bijapur in Bastar, doctors at a district hospital's Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) achieved a rare medical feat by reviving a critically ill newborn suffering from a life-threatening skin disorder. The infant was admitted on April 4 in a fragile state from Korasaguda village and diagnosed with staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), a rare condition where the skin blisters and peels like severe burns, leaving the body highly vulnerable to infection. Without prompt treatment, the condition poses a high risk to life as infection spreads rapidly.
Innovative Use of Banana Leaves
The medical team, led by pediatrician Dr. Neha Chavan, sustained a 25-day treatment regimen combining antibiotic therapy with meticulous nursing care. Given the extreme fragility of the infant's skin, doctors adopted an innovative yet traditional support method—placing the baby on sterilized banana leaves. These leaves served as a soft, non-abrasive surface to minimize friction and reduce the risk of secondary infections. The leaves were changed frequently to maintain hygiene and ensure a sterile environment, proving crucial to the baby's recovery.
Intensive Care and Monitoring
The infant, born to Shanti Motu Punem from Korasaguda village in Basaguda block of Usur, required constant monitoring due to high susceptibility to infections and the delicate condition of its skin. The treatment was carried out under the supervision of Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. B R Pujari and Civil Surgeon Dr. Ratna Thakur, with full administrative backing. Officials emphasized that the case demanded round-the-clock care to prevent complications.
A Miracle Recovery
Family members, who had nearly lost hope of the baby's survival, described the recovery as nothing short of a miracle. They credited the medical team's dedication and relentless efforts for saving the child. The successful outcome highlights the potential of combining modern medicine with locally available resources in resource-limited settings.
