Digital Podiatry Clinic to Revolutionize Diabetic Foot Care at Panjab University
A cutting-edge, technology-driven foot screening facility for diabetic patients is poised to be established at the health centre of Panjab University in Chandigarh. This initiative is backed by a Rs 10 lakh corporate social responsibility (CSR) grant, with an additional Rs 5 lakh contributed by the implementing agency, highlighting a collaborative funding approach.
Innovative Screening Model for Early Detection
The facility, known as a Digital Podiatry Clinic, is being implemented by PI-RAHI with CSR support. Its primary goal is to improve the early detection of diabetic foot complications, which often remain unnoticed until they escalate into severe conditions. Unlike traditional clinical practices where patients undergo separate tests across various departments, this system integrates multiple assessments into a single, streamlined workflow.
- Comprehensive Assessments: The clinic combines tests for nerve sensitivity, vascular status, and plantar pressure, allowing clinicians to evaluate risk comprehensively in one session.
- AI-Powered Analysis: Developed by a Bengaluru-based startup, the platform utilizes AI-supported analysis to classify risks such as neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease.
- Digital Record-Keeping: It generates digital reports and maintains patient records to facilitate ongoing monitoring and follow-up over time.
Focus on Prevention and Efficiency
Prof Rajat Sandhir, Director of PI-RAHI, emphasized that the initiative is designed to support early diagnosis and tracking. "The initiative is expected to improve clinical efficiency and enable early diagnosis, thereby reducing the risk of severe complications such as ulcers and amputations. The platform will also create digital patient records to support long-term monitoring and follow-up," he stated. The model is positioned as a combined screening and monitoring system rather than a standalone diagnostic setup, aiming for broader deployment beyond specialized centres.
Why This Clinic Stands Out
- Single-Window Screening: Integrates nerve, blood flow, and pressure tests into one session, eliminating the need for multiple visits.
- AI-Assisted Risk Classification: Employs data analysis to flag neuropathy and vascular risks, moving beyond manual assessments.
- Beyond Diagnosis: Produces digital reports and tracks patient progress over time for continuous care.
- Designed for Scale: Features a lower-cost, minimal-training system intended for wider adoption in institutional health centres.
- Preventive Focus: Targets early detection to prevent ulcers and other complications from developing.
Medical practitioners note that the success of this facility will hinge on sustained use, effective patient follow-up, and seamless integration with existing healthcare services. Currently, the facility is not yet operational, and further details regarding rollout timelines are awaited. This project represents a significant step forward in diabetic care, leveraging technology to enhance preventive health measures in the region.
