Thanjavur Nurse Fired After Viral Video Shows Patients Standing for IV Drips
Contract Nurse Dismissed at Thanjavur Hospital Over Viral Video

A contractual nurse working at the prestigious Thanjavur Medical College Hospital has been summarily dismissed from service after a disturbing video surfaced on social media. The clip showed her administering intravenous (IV) therapy to patients while they were forced to stand, sparking widespread public anger and condemnation.

Video Exposes Callous Treatment in Oncology Ward

The incident occurred within the oncology department of the hospital's multispecialty block. The nurse in question, identified as R Ranjitha, was employed on a contract basis under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. According to multiple complaints, Ranjitha exhibited a pattern of indifferent behavior towards patients.

Instead of approaching patients at their beds, she would summon them to her seat. She then compelled them to remain standing throughout the entire process of intravenous fluid administration. In a further indignity, once the venous catheter was inserted, she instructed the patients or their accompanying relatives to physically carry the dextrose fluid bag by hand while moving around.

Public Outrage and Swift Disciplinary Action

The video, which was captured by others and posted online on Tuesday, quickly went viral. It depicted an undignified and uncomfortable experience for the vulnerable patients. Sources added that when a patient's relative pointed out an issue with the fluid bag, the nurse allegedly scolded them and sent them away.

The public backlash across social media platforms was immediate and severe. Following this, Dean Dr S Poovathi launched a prompt investigation into the matter. The hospital administration confirmed the lapses and took decisive action.

"We have issued orders permanently relieving the contract nurse R. Ranjitha from her duties after confirming the lapses," Dean Dr S Poovathi told TOI.

A Recurring Concern at a Key Healthcare Facility

This incident has cast a renewed spotlight on the conduct of staff at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. As a key referral facility for patients across the delta districts, it holds a critical position in the region's healthcare infrastructure. Unfortunately, the hospital has repeatedly faced scrutiny over reported instances of callous or indifferent behavior by some staff members towards patients.

The dismissal of Nurse Ranjitha underscores a zero-tolerance approach towards patient mistreatment. It also highlights the powerful role of public vigilance and social media in holding healthcare institutions accountable for maintaining dignity and proper care standards.
