AIIMS Patna Inaugurates Advanced SPECT-CT Gamma Camera to Boost Diagnostic Capabilities

In a significant development for healthcare in eastern India, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna inaugurated a cutting-edge SPECT-CT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography–Computed Tomography) Gamma Camera at its nuclear medicine department on Friday. This installation marks a major expansion of advanced diagnostic services, aiming to enhance medical care for patients across Bihar and the broader region.

Forward-Looking Step in Public Healthcare

Chief guest Prof (Brig.) Dr Raju Agarwal highlighted the initiative as a forward-looking step that integrates advanced medical technology with public healthcare delivery. He emphasized that the availability of hybrid imaging at a government institution will ensure more equitable access to high-end diagnostics. This move is expected to reduce the need for patients to seek referrals outside the state, thereby improving convenience and affordability.

Enhanced Diagnostic Accuracy and Clinical Applications

The newly commissioned SPECT-CT system combines functional imaging through SPECT with anatomical imaging through CT, enabling precise localization and characterization of diseases. This fused modality is anticipated to significantly improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making across various medical fields, including:

  • Oncology
  • Cardiology
  • Neurology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Endocrinology, including thyroid and parathyroid disorders

Officials noted that the system will aid in faster diagnosis, accurate staging, and individualized treatment planning, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.

Building a Comprehensive Nuclear Medicine Hub

Dr Pankaj Kumar, associate professor and Head of Department of nuclear medicine and organising chairman of the programme, stated that the department aims to build a comprehensive nuclear medicine hub at AIIMS Patna. He confirmed that the facility was established after fulfilling Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) radiation safety norms and guidelines. This new setup is set to enhance clinical services while supporting postgraduate training, academic initiatives, and research activities.

Commitment to Excellence in Super-Specialty Diagnostics

Medical superintendent Dr Anup Kumar underscored that the commissioning of the SPECT-CT Gamma Camera highlights AIIMS Patna's continued growth as a centre of excellence in super-specialty diagnostics. He reaffirmed the institute's commitment to patient-centric care, emphasizing how this advanced technology aligns with their mission to provide top-tier medical services.

Event Highlights and Attendees

The inauguration event was attended by a distinguished group of senior faculty members and administrators, including Dr Ruchi Sinha, Dr Tribhuwan Kumar, Dr Kranti Bhavana, Dr Amit Raj, and deputy director (administration) Nilotpal Bal. Residents, nursing officers, and staff also participated, showcasing the collaborative effort behind this healthcare advancement.
