AIIMS Jodhpur's First Cadaveric Organ Donation of 2026 Saves Three Lives
In a significant medical achievement, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Jodhpur marked the first cadaveric organ donation of 2026 on Saturday, providing a fresh lease of life to three critically ill patients across Rajasthan. This life-saving procedure involved two recipients in Jodhpur and one in Jaipur, showcasing the power of organ transplantation in modern healthcare.
Tragic Incident Leads to Life-Saving Decision
The donor, Ane Singh, a 58-year-old resident of Khokhra village in Pali district, was admitted to the Emergency Department of AIIMS Jodhpur on January 19 after suddenly losing consciousness at home. Despite receiving intensive medical care, his condition deteriorated rapidly. A medical board later declared him brain dead, confirming irreversible neurological damage, which paved the way for the organ donation process.
Family's Courageous Consent Enables Transplants
Following the declaration of brain death, the transplant coordination team at AIIMS Jodhpur approached the family to discuss the possibility of organ donation. After careful counselling and consultation among family members, they gave their consent, demonstrating remarkable altruism in a time of grief. Ane Singh's son, Puran Singh, recounted the events, noting that his father was initially taken to a local government hospital, then referred to Bangur Hospital in Pali, and finally to Jodhpur for advanced care.
"When we were informed that he was brain dead and could not be revived, we were asked about donating his organs. After discussing it with other family members, we agreed to give consent," Puran Singh said, highlighting the family's decision to turn tragedy into hope for others.
Successful Transplant Procedures and Coordination
The donated organs included one kidney and the liver, which were successfully transplanted into patients at AIIMS Jodhpur. The second kidney was allocated to a recipient at SMS Hospital in Jaipur. To ensure the timely and safe transfer of the kidney to Jaipur, the Jodhpur traffic police and district administration collaborated to create a dedicated green corridor, facilitating smooth transportation and underscoring the importance of inter-agency coordination in critical healthcare operations.
Leadership and Milestone Achievement
The transplant procedures were carried out under the leadership of Govardhan Dutt Puri, the executive director of AIIMS Jodhpur. With this successful donation, the institute has now completed its 11th successful cadaveric organ donation, reinforcing its commitment to advancing transplant medicine and saving lives in the region. This milestone not only highlights medical expertise but also the growing awareness and acceptance of organ donation in society.
This event serves as a poignant reminder of how organ donation can transform loss into life, benefiting multiple individuals and families across communities.
