Vimsar Burla Resident Doctor Attempts Suicide, Junior Doctors Demand Reforms
Sambalpur: In a distressing incident, a first-year postgraduate resident doctor at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (Vimsar) in Burla allegedly attempted suicide by consuming approximately 30 tablets. The student, from the paediatrics department, is currently under intensive care, with her condition showing gradual improvement, according to hospital sources.
Unclear Motives and Ongoing Investigation
Director in charge Dr Lal Mohan Naik stated that the exact reason behind the suicide attempt remains unclear. He emphasised that the cause will only be known once the student recovers fully and is able to share details. Dr Naik suggested that excessive work pressure might have played a role in the incident and indicated plans to discuss the matter with the department head.
Junior Doctors' Association Raises Alarm
The Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) of Vimsar has expressed deep concern over the event. Members visited the hospital, reviewed the student's health, and held discussions with her family. An urgent general body meeting was convened, where members unanimously condemned the incident and highlighted serious issues, including alleged excessive workload and denial of leave for the resident.
Key Demands for Systemic Reforms
Following discussions with medical authorities, the JDA put forward several critical demands to address the underlying problems:
- A time-bound and impartial inquiry into the incident.
- Strict action against those found responsible.
- Implementation of a zero-tolerance policy against workplace harassment and ragging.
- Mandatory six to eight hours of daily rest for residents.
- Provision of post-night duty rest and proper resting facilities during duty hours.
The association reiterated its commitment to the safety, dignity, and welfare of resident doctors, stressing the need for immediate action and systemic reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
This incident underscores the pressing need for better mental health support and working conditions in medical education institutions across India.
