Telangana's Health Infrastructure Sees Major Expansion Over Three Years
The health department in Telangana has implemented a series of significant initiatives over the past three years to strengthen the state's healthcare infrastructure. With a focus on addressing rising health challenges, these efforts aim to improve accessibility and quality of care for all residents.
Comprehensive Care for Non-Communicable Diseases
In response to the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the government has established NCD clinics in all districts across Telangana. These clinics provide comprehensive medical services to nearly 50 lakh patients suffering from conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. This initiative ensures that individuals with chronic illnesses receive timely and effective treatment closer to home.
Decentralized Cancer Care Services
To combat the growing cancer burden, estimated at approximately 60,000 new cases annually, the government has decentralized cancer care services. Day-care cancer centers have been set up in district headquarters, allowing patients to access chemotherapy locally without the need to travel to Hyderabad. Plans are also in progress to establish four regional cancer care centers, further enhancing the state's capacity to manage cancer treatment efficiently.
Expansion of Renal Care Facilities
Over the past two years, Telangana has added 16 new dialysis centers and 120 additional beds for renal care, bringing the total to 102 centers. Officials have announced plans to open 79 more dialysis facilities, with the goal of ensuring that a dialysis center is available every 25 kilometers. This expansion is designed to reduce travel time and delays in treatment for patients with kidney-related issues.
Specialized Healthcare for Vulnerable Groups
The health department has introduced several specialized services to cater to diverse population needs:
- Maitri Clinics have been established in all districts to provide dedicated healthcare, counseling, and support services for the transgender community. These clinics offer free gender-affirming surgeries at Osmania General Hospital (OGH).
- Geriatric clinics are being introduced across government hospitals to address the healthcare requirements of the elderly population.
- In reproductive health, free IVF services are available at centers in Gandhi and Petlaburj hospitals, with another facility planned for Warangal. Over the past two years, more than 25,000 patients have utilized these services, resulting in 202 successful pregnancies so far.
Enhanced Emergency Response and Pain Management
To improve emergency medical services, the government has deployed 213 new ambulances—one for each mandal—significantly strengthening emergency response capabilities. This initiative has reduced response times to 14 minutes in tribal areas and 13 minutes in rural regions. Additionally, a pain clinic has been launched at Osmania Hospital to manage chronic pain conditions, offering specialized care for patients dealing with long-term discomfort.
These comprehensive measures reflect Telangana's commitment to building a robust and inclusive healthcare system that addresses both common and specialized medical needs across the state.
