SGPGI Governing Body Approves Workforce for New Advanced Pediatric Centre in Lucknow

The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow has taken a significant step forward in enhancing pediatric healthcare services. On Friday, the institute's governing body approved the appointment of the workforce required for the upcoming 573-bed advanced pediatric centre.

The decision was made during the 104th meeting of the institute's apex decision-making body, which was convened by Chief Secretary SP Goyal. Sources revealed that the centre will require a total of 2,314 employees for full-strength functioning. This includes:

  • 131 faculty members
  • 483 residents
  • 1,540 non-faculty staff
  • 160 outsourced employees

All positions have been approved, but recruitment will be undertaken in a phased manner. The initial phase will begin with 60 faculty members and 205 residents, ensuring a gradual build-up to full capacity.

Significance for Pediatric Healthcare

SGPGI Director Prof RK Dhiman emphasized the centre's importance, stating, "The new facility is expected to become a major centre for specialised and super-specialty treatment for children, benefiting more than 10 crore pediatric patients in Uttar Pradesh and adjoining states."

He highlighted the demographic need, noting that 40% of Uttar Pradesh's population is below 18 years of age. "Compared to the elderly, management of diseases in children is very different," Prof Dhiman explained, underscoring the necessity for dedicated pediatric care.

Facility Details and Departments

The advanced pediatric centre will feature 21 departments and six specialties, covering a wide range of medical services. These will include:

  1. Intensive care units
  2. Day care facilities
  3. General beds
  4. Isolation wards
  5. Critical care sections

This comprehensive setup aims to address specific medical needs of children and adolescents, providing holistic and specialized treatment options.

Meeting Attendees and Next Steps

The meeting was attended by key officials, including Dean Prof Shaleen Kumar, faculty members, members of the governing body, and the Director General of Medical Education. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort to launch this vital healthcare initiative.

With the workforce approvals in place, SGPGI is now poised to begin the recruitment process, marking a crucial milestone in the development of the pediatric centre. This facility is set to transform pediatric healthcare in the region, offering advanced medical services to millions of young patients.
