PGI Chandigarh Announces New Standalone Transplant Centre at Sarangpur Satellite Campus

In a significant development for healthcare in North India, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Chandigarh has announced plans to establish a dedicated, standalone transplant centre at its upcoming Sarangpur satellite campus. This ambitious project aims to consolidate all organ transplant disciplines under one unified roof, marking a strategic shift from the current decentralised model to a world-class, integrated hub.

Director's Vision and Commitment

The announcement was made by PGI director Prof Vivek Lal during the inaugural session of the Indian Society of Transplant Surgeons annual conference on Saturday. Prof Lal emphasised his personal commitment to the project, stating he would actively engage with the Union Ministry of Health to expedite its development. "A standalone transplant centre at PGIMER will become a reality. We will strengthen infrastructure, expand training, and ensure that transplantation services grow in both scale and impact," said Prof Lal.

Current Transplant Services and Future Integration

Currently, transplant services at PGI are distributed across various specialised departments. While these units deliver strong clinical outcomes, the new centre is designed to streamline patient care by integrating all types of organ transplant surgeries. The current setup includes:

  • Kidney transplantation handled by the departments of urology, general surgery, and transplant surgery.
  • Liver and heart surgeries managed by the hepatology and cardiothoracic departments.

By centralising these services at the Sarangpur site—where space is already available—the institute aims to eliminate administrative and clinical delays, providing a more seamless experience for both patients and donor families.

Enhanced Infrastructure and Patient Benefits

The new transplant centre will feature additional surgical suites and specialised wards, significantly improving operational efficiency. Prof Lal described transplantation as a "noble surgery" that restores dignity and hope, particularly for those enduring the hardships of long-term dialysis. This facility is expected to enhance the overall patient journey, reducing wait times and improving access to critical care.

Scaling Up Transplant Volumes and Expertise

While PGI already possesses a pool of highly trained specialists and manpower, the standalone centre will allow these experts to focus exclusively on advancing all forms of organ transplant surgeries. The project is anticipated to significantly upscale transplant volumes, positioning PGI as a premier destination for complex multi-organ procedures in the region.

"PGI has the advantage of having the highest number of kidney transplant surgeries in the country. Being a Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organizations centre, it has been networking with adjoining states for the transplant programme," noted a faculty member. This existing expertise, combined with the new infrastructure, is set to bolster PGI's leadership in transplant medicine.

Strategic Impact and Future Outlook

The establishment of this dedicated transplant centre represents a major step forward in India's healthcare landscape. By transitioning to a centralised model, PGI aims to:

  1. Improve coordination among transplant teams.
  2. Enhance training and research opportunities in transplant surgery.
  3. Increase the availability of life-saving procedures for patients across North India.

This initiative underscores PGI's commitment to innovation and excellence in medical care, promising to set new benchmarks in organ transplantation services.
