The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has intensified its heat action plan as temperatures continue to rise, with 38 heat-related illnesses already reported. The civic body is taking proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the scorching heat on residents, particularly vulnerable groups.
Cold Wards and Shelter Homes
Eleven government health facilities have established dedicated cold wards to treat heat-related ailments. Additionally, efforts to protect homeless individuals have been strengthened, with 50 people relocated to shelter homes in the past week. This brings the occupancy to 432 out of the 450-bed capacity, ensuring that those without shelter have access to cooler environments.
Revised Work and School Timings
To minimize heat exposure for outdoor workers, sanitation workers' shifts have been adjusted to operate from 5 am to 1 pm until June 15. Furthermore, 31 traffic signals will function on blinker mode during afternoon hours to reduce congestion and idling time. School timings for anganwadis, primary, and secondary schools have been revised to 7 am to 10:30 am, allowing students to attend classes during cooler morning hours.
Advisory for Citizens
Citizens are strongly advised to avoid stepping out between 12 noon and 4 pm unless absolutely necessary. When outdoors, they should use protective gear such as hats, umbrellas, or cloth coverings to shield themselves from direct sunlight. The health department emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated by consuming water and fluids like lemon water, buttermilk, and coconut water. Special caution is urged for children, senior citizens, and pregnant women, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
Mayor and Health Officials Oversee Implementation
Mayor Neeta Thakre has urged residents to remain cautious and follow the advisory. The implementation of the heat action plan is being overseen by Medical Services and Health Committee chairperson Manisha Atkare and medical health officer Dr. Deepak Selokar. All health centers and hospitals have been directed to remain equipped with necessary medicines and facilities as the city braces for peak summer conditions.
Symptoms and Immediate Action
Symptoms of heat-related illness include dizziness, vomiting, headache, and fever. Anyone experiencing these signs should seek immediate medical attention. Drinking water and shaded spaces have been arranged in parks for vendors, travelers, and the homeless, with parks remaining open during afternoon hours to provide relief.
