NEIGRIHMS and AIIMS Delhi Forge Partnership to Launch Burns Unit in Shillong
The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong has announced a significant collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi to establish a dedicated burns unit at the hospital. This initiative aims to strengthen burns care services for the people of Meghalaya and the entire northeastern region of India.
Expert Guidance and Planning for Modern Burns Care Facility
During a recent programme titled Capacity Building in Burns Care held on Friday, detailed discussions and planning sessions took place with Professor Maneesh Singhal, who heads the department of burns and plastic surgery at AIIMS-New Delhi. According to an official statement released by NEIGRIHMS, these discussions focused on the establishment of a state-of-the-art burns unit designed to provide comprehensive patient care.
Professor Singhal offered expert guidance on several critical components necessary for setting up a modern burns unit. This included advice on site selection, infrastructure planning, manpower and human resources allocation, and the procurement of essential medical equipment. The emphasis was on creating a facility that meets international standards for burns treatment and rehabilitation.
Coordinated Efforts Across Multiple Departments
The NEIGRIHMS statement highlighted that establishing a dedicated burns unit requires coordinated efforts from multiple departments within the hospital. This encompasses clinical, para-clinical, paramedical, and administrative sections to ensure holistic and effective patient care. As the premier central government health institution in Meghalaya, NEIGRIHMS is poised to integrate these diverse functions seamlessly.
The collaboration underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing burn injuries, which often involve complex medical, surgical, and psychological aspects. By involving various departments, the unit aims to address all facets of patient recovery, from initial emergency treatment to long-term rehabilitation.
Long-Term Support and Collaborative Initiatives
AIIMS-New Delhi has committed to providing long-term support and collaboration with NEIGRIHMS to enhance burn care services in the northeastern region. This partnership will include structured training programs, capacity building workshops, manpower development initiatives, and joint research projects focused on burn management.
These collaborative efforts are expected to build local expertise and improve the overall quality of burns care available in Meghalaya and surrounding states. The training programs will equip healthcare professionals with advanced skills and knowledge, while research initiatives may lead to innovations in treatment protocols and patient outcomes.
Significant Step for Regional Healthcare Enhancement
This initiative represents a major advancement in specialized healthcare for Northeast India. By establishing a dedicated burns unit, NEIGRIHMS aims to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for specialized treatment, thereby improving accessibility and reducing treatment delays.
The burns unit is anticipated to serve as a referral center for complex burn cases from across the northeastern states, offering advanced surgical interventions, intensive care, and rehabilitation services. This development aligns with broader efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in remote and underserved regions of India.
The establishment of this burns unit marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of medical services in Shillong and the broader Northeast, promising better health outcomes for burn patients and their families.
