Nagpur's Landmark Diagnostic Centre Opens with Revolutionary Low-Cost MRI and CT Scans
In a significant boost to healthcare accessibility in central India, the Gangadharrao Fadnavis Memorial Diagnostic Centre in Nagpur is set to commence operations this week. The facility will offer MRI scans at approximately Rs 2,100 and CT scans for just Rs 900—rates that are substantially lower than prevailing market prices, marking a major push toward affordable diagnostics.
Grand Inauguration with Prominent Dignitaries
The centre, billed as the region's largest diagnostic hub, will be formally inaugurated on Sunday by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. The ceremony will be attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and other key public representatives, underscoring the project's importance in public health infrastructure.
State-of-the-Art Equipment and Comprehensive Services
Developed over two years following its foundation ceremony led by then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the centre is designed as a comprehensive, single-location diagnostic facility equipped with cutting-edge technology. Its advanced infrastructure includes:
- A high-precision 3 Tesla MRI machine for detailed imaging
- A rapid 124-slice CT scanner for accurate diagnostics
- Two modern sonography units
- 25 dialysis machines with dedicated support systems
- Full-scale X-ray services
- A complete pathology laboratory for comprehensive testing
Addressing Affordability and Accessibility Challenges
Sandip Joshi, a key figure behind the project, emphasized that the facility directly tackles both cost barriers and access issues in healthcare. "Patients often endure long waiting periods for essential diagnostic tests. At this centre, we have optimized processes to ensure significantly faster turnaround times," Joshi stated.
The pricing structure is specifically designed to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for families. Beyond MRI and CT scans, sonography services will be offered at nearly 25% below market rates, X-rays will cost around Rs 200, and dialysis sessions will be priced at approximately Rs 1,600 each. Notably, dialysis will be provided free of charge for eligible beneficiaries under government schemes such as the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana.
Patient-Centric Facilities and Future Expansion
The centre incorporates several patient support systems to enhance the healthcare experience, including dedicated help desks, assistance staff, and five isolated dialysis beds specifically designed for infection control. Trial runs have been successfully completed, and approval under the Central Government Health Scheme is anticipated within the next month, which will further expand access to government employees and their families.
This initiative represents a transformative step in making advanced medical diagnostics more accessible and affordable for the population of central India, potentially serving as a model for similar healthcare projects across the country.
