National Workshop in Manipal Advocates for Public-Private Collaboration to Enhance Blood Transfusion Services
In a significant move to bolster India's blood transfusion infrastructure, a one-day national workshop was held in Manipal, Karnataka, focusing on strengthening public-private partnerships. The event, organized by the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC) under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, in collaboration with Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, convened at Dr TMA Pai Hall on Wednesday.
Emphasis on Collaboration for Improved Blood Services
Sharath Rao, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, underscored the importance of public and private sector partnerships in fortifying blood transfusion services nationwide. "Public and private partnership is crucial to strengthen blood transfusion services in our country," he stated. "Such collaborations are instrumental in enhancing the quality, safety, and accessibility of blood services for patients, ensuring better healthcare outcomes."
Dr. Rao commended the Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion (IHBT) at KMC Manipal for its unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality blood products and maintaining stringent safety protocols, setting a benchmark in the field.
Workshop Objectives and Participation
The workshop attracted over 100 medical officers and blood centre in-charges from South and Eastern India, providing a platform to address challenges, exchange knowledge, and improve coordination in blood transfusion services. Megha Pravin Khobragade, Deputy Director General (Blood Transfusion Services) at the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, highlighted the workshop's goal to tackle key issues faced by private blood centres and to develop a more efficient and secure blood service system across the country.
Programme Coordinator Shamee Shastry noted that this was the inaugural workshop of its kind, facilitating direct interaction between private blood centres and the NBTC. "This marks a pivotal step towards elevating blood safety and quality standards on a national scale," she emphasized, underscoring the event's historic significance in fostering dialogue and collaboration.
Expert-Led Scientific Sessions and Key Discussions
The workshop featured comprehensive scientific sessions led by national experts, covering a wide array of critical topics:
- Dr. Megha Pravin Khobragade elaborated on the National Blood Policy, outlining strategic frameworks for blood service management.
- Dr. Shamee Shastry delved into quality assurance and External Quality Assessment Schemes (EQAS), emphasizing standards and compliance.
- A session moderated by Dr. Ganesh Mohan addressed the specific challenges encountered by private blood centres, fostering problem-solving discussions.
- Mayank demonstrated e-RaktKosh, showcasing digital solutions for blood bank management and efficiency.
- Dr. Purushottam Puri advocated for promoting voluntary blood donation to ensure a sustainable and safe blood supply.
- Dr. Deepika Chenna explained Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT), highlighting advanced techniques for detecting infections in blood.
- Dr. Ruby Khan discussed capacity building and human resource development, focusing on training and skill enhancement in blood services.
This collaborative effort aims to bridge gaps in the blood transfusion ecosystem, leveraging expertise from both public and private sectors to create a robust, safe, and accessible blood service network for all Indians.
