Mangaluru Deputy Commissioner Orders Comprehensive Master Plan for Wenlock Hospital Development
In a significant move to enhance healthcare infrastructure, Mangaluru Deputy Commissioner Darshan HV has directed officials to prepare and implement a comprehensive master plan for the overall development of Wenlock District Hospital. The directive came during the executive committee meeting of the Arogya Raksha Samithi, which was chaired by the DC at Wenlock Hospital on Wednesday.
Focus on Patient-Friendly Infrastructure and New OPD Building
During the meeting, DC Darshan HV emphasized that a master plan is essential to make various hospital departments more patient-friendly. He instructed officials to act swiftly in this regard, highlighting the need for improved accessibility and convenience for patients. In a key development, Wenlock Hospital Superintendent Dr. Shivaprakash informed the committee that the state government has sanctioned Rs 70 crore for the construction of a new, modern Outpatient Department (OPD) building.
The existing OPD block will be demolished to make way for the new structure. All current departments housed in the OPD building will be temporarily shifted to the trauma block before demolition begins. The tender process for this ambitious project is currently underway, marking a crucial step toward implementation.
Centralization of Key Facilities and Additional Developments
The Deputy Commissioner also directed that essential facilities, including OPD services, X-ray, radiology, and other critical units, be housed in a single location. This centralization aims to significantly enhance patient convenience by reducing the need for multiple visits across different hospital areas.
In other important updates from the meeting:
- A proposal has been sent to the government to constitute a separate Arogya Raksha Samithi for Government Lady Goschen Hospital, indicating broader administrative reforms in the region's healthcare system.
- The construction of a 50-bed critical care building at Wenlock Hospital under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM ABHIM) scheme is nearing completion, promising enhanced emergency care capabilities.
- For the 2.7 acres of vacant land belonging to Wenlock Hospital on Attavar Road, a letter has been sent to the Mangaluru City Corporation requesting the development of a pay-and-park facility to address parking challenges.
- The meeting approved leasing out ground floor shops in the new surgical block building for commercial use through auction, potentially generating revenue for hospital maintenance.
High-Level Attendance and Collaborative Efforts
The executive committee meeting saw participation from several key officials, demonstrating a coordinated approach to healthcare development. Attendees included Zilla Panchayat CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbhari, Lady Goschen Hospital Superintendent Dr. Durgaprasad, and District Health Officer Dr. HR Thimmaiah. Their presence underscores the multi-departmental collaboration required to execute the master plan effectively.
This comprehensive initiative reflects Mangaluru's commitment to upgrading public healthcare infrastructure, with the master plan expected to streamline services, improve patient experience, and modernize facilities at Wenlock District Hospital.
