West Bengal Chief Minister Inaugurates Major Healthcare Infrastructure Projects in Kolkata

In a significant development for the state's medical sector, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remotely inaugurated two new buildings at prominent healthcare institutions in Kolkata on Thursday. The inauguration ceremony was conducted from Nabanna, the state secretariat, marking a boost to medical infrastructure with substantial government investments.

Dr B C Roy Memorial Building at NRS Medical College & Hospital

The newly inaugurated 10-storey Dr B C Roy Memorial building at NRS Medical College & Hospital represents a major upgrade for patient care facilities. This structure will house critical departments including emergency operation theaters for general surgery, orthopaedics, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, cardio-thoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS), general medicine, ophthalmology, radiology, anaesthesiology, and gastroenterology.

Key features of this facility include:

  • Additional ICU/ITU beds to accommodate more critical patients
  • A new 128-slice CT scan facility for advanced diagnostic capabilities
  • Modern infrastructure to improve overall patient care and treatment outcomes

The West Bengal government has invested Rs 148 crore in this project, which is expected to significantly enhance the hospital's capacity. However, sources indicate that it will take some time for all departments to complete their transition to the new building.

New Administrative Building at West Bengal University of Health Sciences

Simultaneously, Chief Minister Banerjee inaugurated a new building at the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) campus in Salt Lake. This facility, constructed with an investment of Rs 102.7 crore, will house several administrative offices of the university along with modern seminar halls.

The West Bengal University of Health Sciences, established in 2003, oversees 257 streams across different medical institutions throughout the state. University sources revealed that space constraints had become a significant challenge for administrative operations, making this new building a crucial addition to support the institution's growing needs.

Infrastructure Development for Enhanced Healthcare Services

These inaugurations represent a combined investment of Rs 250.7 crore in Kolkata's healthcare infrastructure. The dual projects address both clinical and administrative aspects of medical education and service delivery in West Bengal.

The remote inauguration by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlights the government's commitment to strengthening medical facilities across the state, particularly in Kolkata where these institutions serve a large population. The enhanced infrastructure at NRS Medical College & Hospital is expected to improve patient care through expanded capacity and advanced diagnostic capabilities, while the new WBUHS building will facilitate smoother administrative operations for medical education governance.
