Maharashtra Government to Expedite ESIC Medical College Proposal for Nagpur

The Maharashtra government has provided a firm assurance that a proposal for setting up an Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College in Nagpur will be promptly forwarded to the Central government after resolving technical concerns. This commitment was made during a legislative discussion, highlighting the state's proactive approach to enhancing medical education and healthcare services in the region.

Legislative Discussion Highlights Urgency

During a session in the state assembly, MLA Pravin Datke raised questions regarding the delay in submitting the proposal for the ESIC medical college in Nagpur. In response, Prakash Abitkar, the Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare, informed the House that the government is positively inclined towards establishing the college and will revise the proposal to address any technical issues before sending it to the Centre.

Datke pointed out that the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment had decided in 2025 to establish 10 new medical colleges across India, including locations in Nagpur and Pune. While proposals from other sites have been submitted, the one for Nagpur remains pending, despite the city being represented by influential leaders such as Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Benefits of the Proposed Medical College

The establishment of the ESIC Medical College in Nagpur is expected to bring multiple advantages:

  • Increase in MBBS Seats: The college would add to the number of MBBS seats available, becoming the third medical college in Nagpur after the Government Medical College and Indira Gandhi Medical College.
  • Healthcare Enhancement: It would improve healthcare infrastructure, particularly for workers in industrial areas like New Nagpur and Mihan, where the existing workers' hospital at Hanuman Nagar currently operates only as an Outpatient Department (OPD) facility.
  • Employment Generation: The project is anticipated to create job opportunities, contributing to local economic growth.

Government's Commitment to Timely Action

Minister Abitkar emphasized that the government is committed to expediting the process. He assured that the proposal would be revised to meet all necessary requirements and submitted to the Centre without further delay. This move aims to align with the national initiative to expand medical education and address the growing demand for healthcare professionals in Maharashtra.

The discussion underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between state and central authorities to overcome bureaucratic hurdles and implement projects that benefit public health and education. With the revised proposal, Nagpur is poised to see significant advancements in its medical infrastructure, supporting both students and the wider community.
