Lucknow Cancer Institute to Get CyberKnife, Brachytherapy Soon

Patients at Lucknow's Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute will soon receive advanced radiation-based treatments. The institute plans to introduce CyberKnife and brachytherapy facilities in its radiotherapy department.

CyberKnife Installation Underway

Institute director Prof MLB Bhatt announced the development during the eighth foundation day celebrations of the radiotherapy department. The event took place on Saturday at the institute auditorium.

Prof Bhatt confirmed that installation of the CyberKnife system is currently in progress. The system costs approximately Rs 51 crore. Treatment using this advanced technology should begin within two to three months.

Precision Treatment Benefits

The CyberKnife allows for high-precision radiotherapy in less time than traditional methods. It can effectively treat cancers of the lungs, liver, brain tumours, bones and other organs. Importantly, this treatment often eliminates the need for surgery.

Brachytherapy Services Coming Soon

Radiotherapy department head Dr Sharad Singh revealed that brachytherapy services will also start soon at the institute. Installation of a machine costing about Rs 7 crore has already begun.

After installation, medical staff will conduct trial runs. Dr Pramod Gupta, organising secretary of the programme, explained that brachytherapy would help in accurate treatment of specific cancers.

Targeted Cancer Treatment

Brachytherapy proves particularly effective for cervical, breast, prostate, endometrial, and head and neck cancers. Special guest Dr Satyajit Pradhan from Homi Bhabha Tata Cancer Centre in Varanasi emphasized its value.

Dr Pradhan noted that brachytherapy works especially well for cervical cancer among women. He added that even after surgery and chemotherapy, residual tumours can be targeted effectively with this approach.

Department Progress Recognized

Chief guest Prof CM Singh, director of Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, acknowledged substantial progress in the radiotherapy department over the past eight years. The department has developed significantly since its establishment.

Several dignitaries attended the foundation day event. Medical superintendent Dr Vijay Varun, registrar Dr Ayush Lohia, CMS Dr Vijendra and dean Dr Sabuhi Qureshi were all present for the celebrations.

The new facilities represent a significant advancement in cancer care for Lucknow and surrounding regions. Patients will soon have access to cutting-edge treatment options previously unavailable locally.
