Kerala Government Invests Rs 1,600 Crore in Free Healthcare Services

In a significant announcement, Kerala Health Minister Veena George revealed on Tuesday that the state government has allocated a substantial Rs 1,600 crore to provide free medical treatment to the public. This declaration came during the online inauguration of the newly-constructed mother and child super specialty block and other critical projects at the Government Medical College in Ernakulam.

Comprehensive Healthcare Services Across Medical Colleges

Minister George detailed the extensive medical services being offered across government medical colleges throughout Kerala. She highlighted that approximately 3,000 dialysis sessions and 200 angioplasties are conducted regularly, ensuring accessible treatment for chronic conditions. Furthermore, she confirmed that cath labs are now operational in all district hospitals, enhancing diagnostic and interventional capabilities at the grassroots level.

Advanced Medical Treatments and Specialized Care

The health minister emphasized the remarkable advances in government hospitals, which now include:

  • Modern stroke units for emergency neurological care
  • Robotic surgery systems for precision operations
  • Innovative cancer research initiatives
  • CAR T-cell therapy for advanced oncology treatments
  • Bone marrow and liver transplant facilities
  • Free treatment for rare diseases, specifically spinal muscular atrophy for children up to five years of age

New Mother and Child Super Specialty Block

The centerpiece of the inauguration was the mother and child super specialty block, constructed at a cost of Rs 285 crore. This expansive facility spans 8.27 lakh square feet and houses 850 beds, designed specifically to provide advanced care for pregnant women and children. The block incorporates state-of-the-art diagnostic systems and features a microbiology lab equipped for level 2 virology testing, established with Rs 1.97 crore in funding from the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Additional Infrastructure and Amenities

Several other enhancements were unveiled alongside the super specialty block:

  1. Twelve pay wards constructed with Rs 2.5 crore from the health and family welfare department's plan fund
  2. A cosmetology clinic with advanced equipment established under the dermatology department in collaboration with BPCL
  3. A multi-level parking facility to accommodate increased visitor traffic
  4. A new lift installed for the academic block to improve accessibility

Official Inauguration and Transportation Initiative

The event was chaired by Minister P Rajeev, who also flagged off a new KSRTC bus service. This service connects Idukki and Kattappana to the Kalamassery medical college, facilitating easier access for patients and visitors from these regions. This transportation initiative underscores the government's commitment to making healthcare services more reachable for all residents across Kerala.
