KEM Hospital's Innovative Radial Lounge Enhances Cardiac Patient Care in Mumbai
Mumbai's renowned KEM Hospital has implemented a groundbreaking 'Radial Lounge' facility, designed to significantly improve efficiency in cardiac care. This innovative setup replaces traditional hospital beds with specialized recovery recliners, allowing the hospital to treat approximately five more patients each day. The primary goal is to reduce waiting times for urgent cardiac cases while maintaining high-quality care for all patients.
Transforming Post-Procedure Recovery for Heart Patients
Historically, heart patients undergoing procedures have occupied hospital beds for several hours during recovery due to post-procedure requirements. However, not all patients necessitate a full bed, particularly those who have undergone radial artery procedures through the wrist. This method, unlike the traditional groin approach used for angiography, eliminates the risk of internal abdominal bleeding, thereby not restricting patient mobility during recovery.
Dr. Sangeeta Ravat, Dean of KEM Hospital, emphasized that the Radial Lounge aims to slash waiting times for new admissions while upholding excellent care standards for existing patients. She highlighted that the new facility features five specialized recliner chairs, each equipped with integrated real-time vital monitors. The project, costing over Rs 75 lakh, was funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions from The Indian Hume Pipe Co. Ltd.
Increasing Hospital Capacity and Patient Comfort
Dr. Ajay Mahajan, Head of Cardiology at KEM Hospital, explained that previously, there was no alternative but to keep patients in beds for recovery. "Each day, beds were occupied for several hours while radial artery patients recovered. Now, with the Radial Lounge, this is no longer necessary, effectively increasing our capacity to treat more patients," he stated.
While day-care procedures are common in both private and public hospitals, post-procedure management in the public sector has often lacked comfort. A cardiologist from another Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospital noted that such lounges are not yet standard in public facilities. Currently, most patients are observed in small, separate rooms without monitors, using ordinary chairs. "It is not very comfortable for the patient, but we make it work," the cardiologist added, underscoring the need for improved infrastructure.
Broader Implications for Healthcare Efficiency
The introduction of the Radial Lounge at KEM Hospital represents a significant step forward in optimizing healthcare resources. By freeing up beds previously used for radial artery patient recovery, the hospital can now accommodate more critical cases, enhancing overall emergency response capabilities. This initiative not only benefits patients by providing a more comfortable recovery environment but also sets a precedent for other public hospitals to adopt similar innovative solutions.
As healthcare systems face increasing demands, such cost-effective and patient-centered approaches are crucial. The Radial Lounge demonstrates how strategic investments in medical infrastructure can lead to tangible improvements in patient outcomes and hospital efficiency, potentially inspiring reforms across India's public health sector.
