Karnataka Lokayukta Exposes Severe Lapses at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru
In a shocking revelation, the Karnataka Lokayukta has uncovered multiple irregularities at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru following a suo motu investigation into the functioning of private ambulances and patient care practices on its campus. The probe was initiated after receiving numerous complaints about exploitation by private ambulance operators and middlemen who were allegedly luring patients to private hospitals by claiming inadequate facilities at Victoria Hospital.
Exploitation and Negligence Uncovered
The investigation revealed that these agents were operating freely within the hospital premises, persuading doctors and attendants to shift patients. Some hospital staff were even accused of encouraging the use of private ambulances, exacerbating the situation. Medical officers pointed out that a critical shortage of beds is a key factor enabling such exploitation, which has also led to assaults on doctors and staff.
Surprise Inspection Details
The Lokayukta constituted a committee to conduct a surprise inspection, which reported alarming findings. In the Trauma and Emergency Care Centre (TECC), expired medicines were discovered in the ICU. Additionally, an emergency patient was denied admission on the grounds of no available beds, despite six vacant beds in the ICU. It was later found that these beds were non-functional due to faulty ventilators, highlighting severe negligence in maintenance.
Recommendations and Actions
In response, the Lokayukta has directed the police to enhance surveillance and curb the activities of unauthorized ambulance operators and middlemen. It has also recommended that the government consider introducing a prepaid ambulance system to regulate services and prevent further exploitation. This move aims to ensure better patient care and accountability at the hospital.
The findings underscore significant administrative failures at Victoria Hospital, calling for urgent reforms to safeguard patient welfare and improve healthcare standards in Bengaluru.
