A 20-year-old female engineering student died by suicide in her hostel room in Tumakuru, Karnataka, on Tuesday night. The incident occurred at a private engineering college hostel in the Kyathasandra area, according to police.
Details of the Incident
The student, identified as a second-year BE student from the college, was found hanging in her room by her roommate around 10:30 PM. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. No suicide note was recovered from the scene, police said.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the student was under stress due to academic pressure, but the exact cause of the extreme step is yet to be ascertained. The Kyathasandra police have registered a case of unnatural death and are probing the matter.
Police Investigation Underway
Speaking to reporters, a police official from Kyathasandra station stated, "We have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the student's death. Her family has been informed, and we are awaiting their statement. We are also examining her phone and speaking to her friends and classmates to understand if there was any specific trigger."
The student's body has been sent for postmortem examination at the Tumakuru district hospital. The results are awaited to rule out any foul play.
Rising Concerns Over Student Suicides
This incident adds to the growing concern over student suicides in Karnataka, particularly among engineering students. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Karnataka recorded 891 student suicides in 2021, one of the highest in the country. Academic pressure, mental health issues, and relationship problems are often cited as contributing factors.
