The Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) has initiated the groundwork for establishing a major new healthcare facility in the city. This move comes following a specific government directive, paving the way for a modern 500-bed super speciality hospital.
Project Details and Government Mandate
The hospital will be constructed on a 4,500 square metre plot of land that belongs to the Georgina McRoberts Memorial Hospital, located in the McRoberts Ganj area. The site has been formally transferred to the KDA for this purpose. The development will be executed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, a framework designed to combine public oversight with private sector efficiency.
The government order, issued by Principal Secretary P Guruprasad to the District Magistrate, carries strict conditions. It stipulates that the land must be utilized for the stated purpose within a period of three years. Failure to do so will result in the land reverting to the government. The order explicitly mandates that the land be used solely for the proposed hospital and prohibits the construction of any buildings of religious or historical significance, as it is classified as nazul land. Any future change in the use of this land would require fresh permission from the Housing and Urban Planning Department.

The KDA's town planning department is currently preparing a detailed blueprint to facilitate the tender process. According to KDA's Chief Town Planner Manoj Kumar, a consultant will be appointed shortly to draft a comprehensive work plan. Kumar emphasized that the plan is being designed with the needs of the poor in mind, ensuring broad accessibility.
The envisioned hospital is set to be a state-of-the-art facility. It will not only house 500 beds but will also include modern medical equipment and specialized treatment units. To support patients and visitors, the plan incorporates dedicated parking arrangements and accommodation rooms.
