Jharkhand Government Proposes Major Expansion of Medical Education Capacity
The Jharkhand government has formally approached the National Medical Commission with a significant proposal to enhance the state's medical education framework. Officials confirmed on Saturday that the state has requested approval for 431 additional seats in government-run medical colleges, targeting the 2027-28 academic session.
Comprehensive Proposal to Strengthen Healthcare Infrastructure
In a detailed submission, the State Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare has outlined a plan to add 220 undergraduate (UG) and 211 postgraduate (PG) seats. This strategic initiative is positioned as a crucial step toward strengthening Jharkhand's healthcare infrastructure and improving the quality of medical education available within the state.
Ajoy Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, emphasized the importance of this expansion. "The increase in PG seats would ensure smoother functioning of medical education within the state. This initiative would help address the shortage of specialist doctors and enable the people of Jharkhand to access better healthcare. Increase in the number of doctors will help provide timely and quality healthcare," Singh stated.
Recent Seat Increases and Future Targets
The proposal builds upon recent expansions already implemented in the state's medical colleges. During the 2026-27 academic year, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur saw its UG seats increase from 100 to 150, while PG seats rose from 45 to 51. Similarly, Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad experienced growth in PG seats from 9 to 19.
Looking forward, department officials have outlined specific requests for the 2027-28 session:
- 50 additional UG seats each for medical colleges in Dhanbad, Dumka, and Hazaribag, bringing each institution's total to 150 seats
- 70 additional UG seats for Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi, which currently has 180 UG seats
Broader Vision to Double Undergraduate Capacity
This seat expansion initiative forms part of a comprehensive four-year plan to substantially increase medical education capacity across Jharkhand. The state aims to nearly double its total undergraduate medical seats from the current 730 to 1,500 over the coming years, representing a transformative investment in healthcare workforce development.
Postgraduate Program Expansion Across Multiple Institutions
The proposal includes significant enhancements to postgraduate medical education as well:
- Introduction of PG courses at Phulo Jhano Medical College in Dumka with 21 seats
- Launch of PG programs at Medini Rai Medical College in Palamu with 21 seats
- Establishment of PG courses at Sheikh Bihari Medical College in Hazaribag with 30 seats beginning in 2027-28
Additionally, the department plans to augment existing PG programs:
- 48 new PG seats at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (currently 51 seats)
- 21 new PG seats at Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (currently 19 seats)
- 70 new PG seats at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, increasing its PG capacity to 246 seats
This comprehensive proposal now awaits consideration by the National Medical Commission, with potential approval expected to significantly impact healthcare delivery and medical education quality across Jharkhand for years to come.
