Jamshedpur's Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital will finally receive a reliable piped water supply this April. Officials confirmed the development this week, marking a significant upgrade for the medical facility.
Pipeline Construction Underway
Work on the crucial 3.5-kilometer pipeline began last week. This pipeline will transport water directly from the Subarnarekha River at Sankosai to the hospital's Dimna campus. The Mango Notified Area Committee oversees the entire project.
Project Details and Funding
The ambitious project carries a price tag of Rs 8.69 crore. Krishna Kumar, the acting deputy municipal commissioner of MNAC, stated that water supply to the hospital will commence once pipeline construction finishes completely.
Dr. Diwakar Hansda, principal of MGMMCH, provided specific updates about the construction progress. "We are completing the final stages of the intake well construction," he explained. "Simultaneously, work continues on the water treatment plant. Once operational, this plant will supply clean water to our sump."
Transforming Hospital Operations
The new system will deliver three million litres of water daily to the hospital campus. This represents a substantial increase from current arrangements. Presently, the facility relies on ten borewells that provide just two million litres daily. Three of these borewells specifically serve the college wing.
Dr. Hansda emphasized the importance of this upgrade for patient care. "Clean water will flow directly to our indoor wards, outdoor wards, and operation theatres," he noted. "This will significantly improve our medical services and hygiene standards."
Future Expansion Plans
The hospital's new eight-floor campus became operational in 2025 with 750 beds. However, authorities anticipate further growth. "Our water requirements will inevitably increase," Dr. Hansda predicted. "We expect bed capacity to reach 1,000 in the coming years. This new water supply system prepares us for that expansion."
Residents and medical staff have eagerly awaited this infrastructure improvement. The piped water supply promises to enhance healthcare delivery at one of Jamshedpur's most important medical institutions.
