IRCS Andhra Pradesh Unveils Rs 8.4 Crore 'Mee Intiki – Mee Doctor' Rural Healthcare Initiative

In a significant move to bolster rural healthcare, the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Andhra Pradesh state branch, has officially launched an ambitious and innovative healthcare project titled "Mee Intiki – Mee Doctor". With a substantial financial outlay of Rs 8.40 crore, this initiative is set to transform primary healthcare delivery in underserved rural areas over the next three years.

Funding and Strategic Implementation

The project is being fully supported by the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) Limited under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. This strategic partnership underscores a collaborative effort to address critical healthcare gaps. The primary objective is to deliver accessible and quality primary healthcare services directly to rural communities, thereby strengthening the healthcare infrastructure at the grassroots level.

Comprehensive District Coverage and Health Goals

The initiative will be implemented across seven key districts in Andhra Pradesh, ensuring wide-reaching impact. The districts covered include:

  • Palnadu
  • Tirupati
  • Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema
  • West Godavari

The project aims to achieve several critical health outcomes, focusing on:

  1. Reducing the infant mortality rate
  2. Lowering the maternal mortality rate
  3. Decreasing the incidence of communicable diseases
  4. Reducing the overall mortality rate
  5. Achieving 100% immunisation coverage

Mobile Medical Units: Bringing Healthcare to Doorsteps

According to A.K. Parida, a retired IAS officer who serves as the General Secretary & CEO of IRCS, AP state branch and the project nodal officer, the core of this initiative involves deploying Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). Each MMU is staffed with a dedicated team comprising a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, and driver.

These units will visit households in every village, with a particular focus on underprivileged and underserved communities, including SC/ST localities and rural poor households. The goal is to provide comprehensive primary healthcare services right at the beneficiaries' doorsteps.

Target Beneficiaries and Service Scope

The project specifically targets vulnerable groups, including:

  • Pregnant women
  • Children aged 0-6 years
  • Individuals suffering from communicable diseases such as TB, dengue, and malaria
  • Elderly persons above 60 years with lifestyle and other health conditions

Each MMU is equipped to provide a wide range of healthcare services, including the free distribution of medicines. On average, each unit caters to about 100 persons per day, covering approximately 2,000 beneficiaries per month. Across all seven districts, this translates to a total of 14,000 beneficiaries monthly.

Projected Impact and Initial Implementation Phase

The "Mee Intiki – Mee Doctor" project is expected to benefit approximately two lakh individuals annually, with a cumulative reach of about six lakh beneficiaries over the three-year period. During the initial phase from March to May, the project will cover specific villages in each district:

  • 98 villages in Komarada mandal of Parvathipuram Manyam
  • 199 villages in Paderu Mandal of Alluri Sitharama Raju district
  • 15 villages in Bandi Atmakur mandal of Nandyal
  • 23 villages in Chandragiri mandal of Tirupati
  • 17 villages in Narasaraopet mandal of Palnadu
  • 18 villages in Narsapuram mandal of West Godavari district
  • 14 villages in Katrenikona mandal of Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district

Governance and Monitoring Framework

To ensure effective implementation and rigorous monitoring, project implementation committees have been constituted in each of the seven districts. These committees will operate under the leadership of the respective district collectors and presidents of the IRCS district branches, providing a structured governance framework to oversee the project's progress and impact.
