Himachal Pradesh Government Announces Major Reforms to Tackle Medical Faculty Shortage
In a significant move to address the critical shortage of faculty in medical institutions, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Wednesday that the retirement age of professors will be raised to 65 years for the next three years. This decision is specifically aimed at supporting newer medical colleges and alleviating the scarcity of super-specialists, particularly at Tanda Medical College.
Enhancing Staffing and Promotional Opportunities
The Chief Minister clarified that this extension will not hinder promotional opportunities for other faculty members, ensuring a balanced approach to career growth within the medical education sector. To further bolster staffing levels, the government will also designate assistant and associate professors as needed across various institutions.
Expansion of Postgraduate Seats Across Medical Colleges
In a parallel effort to improve institutional efficiency and patient care, the state government is increasing postgraduate (PG) seats in multiple medical colleges. The expansion includes:
- 57 seats in Tanda Medical College
- 29 seats in Mandi Medical College
- 32 seats in Nahan Medical College
- 33 seats in Chamba Medical College
- 67 seats in Hamirpur Medical College
- 96 seats in Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla
This strategic increase is expected to enhance the quality of medical education and healthcare services throughout Himachal Pradesh.
Government's Commitment to Healthcare Infrastructure
Chairing a review meeting of the medical education department, Chief Minister Sukhu directed officials to ensure efficient healthcare services across all state medical colleges. He emphasized that strengthening healthcare infrastructure, with a particular focus on diagnostic services, remains a top priority for the government.
Additionally, Sukhu announced that all vacant nursing posts will be filled by November this year, along with the recruitment of adequate technical staff. To support these initiatives, the government has allocated substantial funds:
- Rs 192 crore for Phase II of Chamba Medical College
- Rs 500 crore for Nahan Medical College
Investments in Modern Equipment and Health Tourism
In a further boost to the healthcare sector, the Chief Minister revealed plans to invest Rs 3,000 crore in modern medical equipment. This investment is part of broader efforts to promote health tourism in Himachal Pradesh, aiming to attract patients from across the region and beyond.
These comprehensive measures underscore the state government's dedication to addressing faculty shortages, expanding medical education capacity, and upgrading healthcare infrastructure to ensure better patient care and institutional efficiency.
