Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Inaugurates Advanced Robotic Surgery Facility in Shimla
In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a state-of-the-art robotic surgery facility at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla on Wednesday. The facility, valued at Rs 28 crore, is poised to revolutionize medical services in the hill state by enabling precise and minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Enhanced Surgical Capabilities and Patient Benefits
The robotic surgery unit is designed to support advanced surgical techniques across various specialties, including general surgery, gastro surgery, oncology, and gynaecology. By allowing doctors to perform complex operations with greater accuracy, the technology is expected to lead to improved patient outcomes and faster recovery times. Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that this initiative will provide residents across Himachal Pradesh with access to cutting-edge surgical treatments closer to their homes, reducing the need for travel to distant medical centers.
Affordable Pricing and Expansion Plans
The state government has established fixed fees for robotic surgeries to ensure affordability. Patients opting for special wards will be charged Rs 50,000, while those in general wards will pay Rs 30,000. This move aims to make advanced healthcare accessible to a broader segment of the population. Sukhu also announced expansion plans, revealing that a robotic surgery machine will be installed at Hamirpur Medical College by next month. Additionally, the government is considering extending the facility to Kullu and other remote areas to benefit residents in far-flung regions.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure Across the State
This inauguration is part of a broader effort to modernize healthcare in Himachal Pradesh. Similar robotic surgery facilities have recently been launched at Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda (Kangra district), Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College in Nerchowk (Mandi district), and AIIMS Chamiyana in Shimla district. Furthermore, advanced laboratories are being set up at IGMC Shimla, Chamiyana, and Tanda Medical College to complement these surgical advancements. Notably, a 3-Tesla MRI machine has already been installed at IGMC Shimla, providing critical diagnostic support to patients.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by key officials, including Health Minister Col Dhani Ram Shandil (Retd), MLA Harish Janartha, and other officers from the health department. Their presence underscored the government's commitment to enhancing public health services through technological innovation and infrastructure development. This robotic surgery facility marks a pivotal step in transforming Himachal Pradesh's healthcare landscape, ensuring that residents receive high-quality medical care with modern amenities.
