Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal possesses a rare advantage for a government healthcare facility: two separate sets of MRI and CT scanners located in different blocks. These advanced diagnostic tools offer CT scans starting at just Rs 900 and MRIs from Rs 2,000, making critical imaging services significantly more affordable for patients. This expansion could benefit hundreds of individuals requiring timely medical diagnostics.
Administrative Bottlenecks Overshadow Modernization
However, what should have been a showcase of enhanced healthcare infrastructure has instead exposed serious administrative bottlenecks. The transition to the new diagnostic units has been slowed by an ongoing legal dispute with the previous operator, who has refused to vacate the premises. This issue came into sharp focus during additional chief secretary (Health) Ashok Barnwal's recent visit to the Government Medical College (GMC) associated with the hospital.
During the visit, officials acknowledged that work on a new hospital block has been delayed specifically due to the operator's refusal to leave. Until Barnwal's inspection, both the old and new diagnostic facilities were reportedly functional and receiving patient referrals. Since then, a shift has occurred with GMC dean Dr. Kavita Singh and the operator appearing aligned on at least one point: patients are no longer being referred to the old diagnostic unit.
New Equipment Ready but Underutilized
A new diagnostic unit has already been installed in the upgraded hospital block, and authorities confirm it is fully operational and compliant with the latest National Medical Commission (NMC) norms. The modern equipment represents a significant step forward in Hamidia Hospital's diagnostic capabilities, potentially reducing wait times and improving patient outcomes through more accessible imaging services.
Shivam Gupta, operations manager for Falguni Nirvana Private Limited, the current operator, stated, "We are getting patients through our contacts," indicating that despite the administrative hurdles, some diagnostic services continue to be provided through alternative channels.
Legal Dispute Stalls Healthcare Progress
As the legal dispute between hospital authorities and the previous operator continues unresolved, Hamidia Hospital's broader modernization push remains effectively stalled. The expanded diagnostic capacity—a rare asset in government healthcare—is currently underutilized, representing both a missed opportunity for patient care and an inefficient use of public resources.
The situation highlights the complex challenges facing public healthcare infrastructure development, where administrative and legal obstacles can sometimes undermine even well-planned technological upgrades.
